Looking for a simple stocking stuffer with a homemade twist? Why not create a Christmas satchel — something gently scented (forget that disgusting store-bought potpourri) that your friends and family can enjoy all year long.

This satchel uses genuine essential oils, which have fantastic therapeutic benefits — and better still, smell terrific. There are all kinds of amazing homemade Christmas gifts you can make with essential oils, but this satchel is a great example of how simple and elegant they can really be.

You will need:

  • Dried flowers, pine cones, etc.
  • Squares of muslin fabric
  • Essential oils
  • Ribbon
  • Decorative items as you see fit

Cut a rectangular piece of muslin, then fold the right sides together and stitch the outer two edges to make a bag (open on top with the folded edge on the bottom). If necessary, hem the upper edges. Flip it inside out.

Fill the muslin bag about three quarters full with your dried flowers and other lovely natural items. Add 10-15 drops of any combination of essential oils (make sure they’re pure — it’s pricier, but well worth the investment).

Carefully gather the top of the bag and tie it with a ribbon. Then decorate the bag however you like, leaving a loop so they can hang it.

You can make a similar gift by purchasing squares of quilted fabric and sewing a thin layer of potpourri inside with a few essential oil drops (make sure the potpourri is ground up thin). You can then use these as potholders or for putting hot tea pots on top of, both protecting countertops and releasing a beautiful smell.
