How to Choose Perfect Christmas Gifts

Picking and finding unique Christmas gifts isn't rocket science, but it does take some time and effort.

Buying Christmas gifts can be a real pain if you stick to the local mall. I love gift shopping, and part of the experience is finding the exact perfect gift for everybody on my list. There’s just a special feeling that comes when you realize you’ve found something they’re going to love without question — especially if it’s something they never would have expected.

But becoming an expert on Christmas gifts won’t happen overnight, so here’s a crash course on how to make sure you’re the queen or king of Christmas this holiday season!

A guide to unique Christmas gifts

To find Christmas gifts everyone will love, here are the steps to follow.

1. Start early. If you have to special order something, you won’t want to receive it in mid January. Also, starting early makes shopping more enjoyable: you can take your time and find the perfect gifts without any pressure.

2. Budget. Great Christmas gifts don’t have to be expensive, so you shouldn’t go broke paying for them. Be realistic here. I know you want to be generous with your gifting, but if you can only afford $15 a person, write that down. You need to know who you’re buying for and what you can afford.

3. Start thinking about each person’s personality. Jot down not gift ideas, but things you know they love. So for example, my husband’s list right now says:

John – $125 (our agreed upon limit). Sci fi. Star Trek. Gadgets. Computers. Smart phone, games, apps. Dogs.

That’s your gift guide. It’s not specific gifts because you don’t even know what’s out there yet! Instead, it’s a point form list of things the recipient loves and enjoys so you know what to look out for.

4. Group your Christmas gifts. My sister enjoys many of the same things as my husband, so I used a blue highlighter for both of them. My mom, on the other hand, has slightly different tastes, so I probably won’t be shopping at the same stores for her!

5. Decide if you’re willing to shop online. Some people are nervous about it, and the shipping cost might put a bit of a dent in your budget. On the other hand, many stores offer free shipping with a minimum purchase, and major sites offer safe payment methods. I love shopping online, just because the selection is so massive.

Whatever you decide, don’t forget about local speciality shops. There might be some very cool stores hiding in your own backyard. Start browsing through them with your list in your pocket. If you find the perfect gift, snap it up.

If you decide to shop online, start entering your keywords for each person into a search engine along with the word ‘gifts.’ You’ll turn up an overwhelming number of sites with amazingly unique gifts.

Buying great Christmas gifts isn’t rocket science, but it does take some time and effort. Start early and above all, have fun. When they open their Christmas gifts this holiday season, you’ll have the satisfaction of a job well done!
